De Colores, Bright with Colors
Illustrated by David Diaz
The LBBC’s recommendation for January’s Libro del Mes, is David Diaz’s De Colores: Bright with Colors.
How appropriate that our Libro del Mes this month embraces diversity, both within the Latino culture and in our natural world.
De Colores is a well-known folksong that was brought to the Americas by the Spaniards in the 16th century. One rumor has it that a busload of pilgrims wrote the song - and up to 70 verses to accompany it – when their bus broke down in the mountains of Spain.
Since its arrival in the Americas, the song’s popularity has spread throughout the Spanish-speaking world. In 1962, it became the unofficial anthem of the United Farm Workers Union, which was founded by César Chávez - whose birthday was recently celebrated across the country last week on César Chávez Day.
Most of you will probably recognize Diaz’s work from at least two of his other books, César: ¡Sí, se puede! Yes, We Can! by Carmen T. Bernier-Grand, and The Pot that Juan Built by Nancy Andrews-Goebel, both of which were Pura Belpré Honor Books. And this year, he once again received the award for his illustrations in the book, Me, Frida, by Amy Novesky. He has also won the Cadecott Medal for his illustrations in Smoky Night by Eve Bunting.
In this picture book, De Colores, Bright with Colors, Diaz’s bold and colorful illustrations reflect the meaning of the song perfectly. He focuses on two verses plus the refrain, and also includes the musical arrangement in the back of the book.
It is written with full text in Spanish and English. However, though the De Colores song may be translated literally (almost word-for-word) and still retain its meaning, Diaz has chosen to expound a bit, portraying the sentiment and rhythm of the original with beautiful imagery that is supported by his illustrations.

It's all in the voices! Even our 15-year-old babysitter listens and giggles and gets into the story when I read. I'm a little shy, but when I'm performing for my children, not so much...

I make fun reading by having books of all types and changing the voice for each character

I'm also one to do voices so I don't always have to say, "so-and-so said" ... My kids can just tell by the voice I use :-)...and it makes it more entertaining!

I always love when you showcase books in spanish...I try and make reading fun by finding good stories, always being energetic when reading. Asking questions and making sure to stop to smile an laugh.
I also make sure to read together as a family. Everyone loves getting in bed together to read.
We go to the library often to have a lot of new books to read! I also love to cuddle up together and read with a lot of expression!
I like to repeat lines from our favorite books when we're not reading to remind my son of them.

I am always bringing home "new" books so storytime is a surprise to look forward to! Unless, of course, there is a special request for a favorite!

We visit the library every week so we always have a fresh supply of books. I am very lucky that our library system has a ton of books in Spanish.

I agree, it is all in the voices. I also like to ask them questions about the story. Who are the characters? Why was he/she feeling that way? What do you think they should do? and so on...this helps them feel as part of the story and it also helps them understand the story line better.
My chiquitos love to be read to. I've been doing it since before they were even born. They enjoy both books in English and in Spanish.

When I read to my daughter, I will get her to say the last word on the page. Easier, if the book has rhymes. Also, I am a substitute teacher. I love reading to kids in English & Spanish. Showing children the pictures is a must!
LOVE the Latin Baby Book Club! Friends: look for an article soon by my wife (author/illustrator Laura Lacámara) - H ♥ ☮
oh, my girls would love this book! books are a big part of our life. library day is probably the most exciting day of our week! we always have stories before bed, and my almost 5 year old is just starting to read on her own, so she reads us a little book every night, too.
